How Do Non Lethal Self Defense Air Tasers Work?

How Do They Work?
Compressed nitrogen is used to fire two Air Taser probes at a speed of 135 feet per second for a distance of up to fifteen feet. Once the probes make contact with body or clothing an electrical signal is then transmitted throughout the region. The attacker then experiences an instant loss of neuromuscular control and cannot perform any coordinated actions. The electric charge is applied using an automatic timing mechanism on the Air Taser. The initial pre-set time sequence includes an initial seven seconds which is then followed by several 1.8 second breaks. In total the time is thirty seconds each cycle. The pattern of the cycle helps to ensure that the attacker can't recover fast enough to remove the probes. The process of re-equilibration of the nervous system is further disrupted by the follow-on bursts. The user can then safely place the device on the ground and escape while the attacker is disabled.

How Is It So Effective Without Causing Injuries?
The effects of the Air Taser are achieved without the need for impact or body penetration. The loss of control results from a pulsating electrical output that interferes with the communication that occurs between the brain and the muscular system. However, the nerves, muscles and other body elements are not destroyed by the Air Taser. Rather it just affects the natural mode of these body functions. The Air Taser has never been directly attributed in any death.

What Do The Tests Say?
In 1971 and 1974, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, California; Dr. Frank Summers, an anesthesiologist and specialist in medical electronics, completed tests with volunteers. The test occurred in the operating rooms of St. Joseph's Hospital where they had assembled cardiovascular surgeons and cardiologists. They did extensive testing with the taser and filmed the results. The tests monitored every aspect of physiology including a person’s electrocardiographs. There were no lethal effects found in the test and the background work done worked out in the practice.
