Stun Gun Information: What is it and How Does it Work to Protect Me?
What is a Stun Gun?
A stun gun uses a high voltage shot to stop an attacker and thus can be used as a hand held, electrical self defense device. You can quickly immobilize your attacker by touching them with the prongs on the gun, causing them intense pain and loss of their muscle control. However, there is no serious or permanent injury as a result of the jolt since the amperage is very low. Stun guns are carried by police departments, security agencies, and individuals who want a safeguard against personal attack. Since they have incredible stopping power and remain non-lethal they have been proven to make an excellent self defense device. Most stun guns are operated by two 9-volt batteries and can deliver between 65,000 and 500,000 volts.
What Does A Stun Gun Actually Do When Deployed?
The stun gun is specifically designed to affect the nervous system. It uses a high pulse frequency to dump its energy into the muscles, thus causing them to work very rapidly and no efficiently. The blood sugar is depleted by this rapid work cycle since it is converting the sugar into lactic acid in a matter of seconds. It is then difficult to move or function are the energy loss that results. While this is happening, the stun gun is also interrupting the tiny neurological impulses that move throughout the body to help direct muscle movements. This then results in a disorientation and loss of balance which causes the attacker to become passive and confused for a few minutes. During all this the stun gun places no significant effect on the heart or other organs.
The general rule is that a ¼ second contact with a stun gun can repel and startle an attacker with an intense pain and muscle contraction. Intense pain, muscle spasms and a dazed mental state will result after one to two seconds of contact which can drop an attacker to the ground. If you leave the stun gun in contact for over three seconds it will cause intense pain, loss of balance, loss of muscle control, mental confusion and disorientation. Any contact over three seconds will typically cause the attack to fall down. For several minutes the attacker is unable to recover and sometimes the effects can last as long as fifteen minutes.
